Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 onion, sliced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 packet brown gravy mix
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Patties
Combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper in a large bowl.
Mix gently until just combined. Overmixing can make the patties tough.
Shape the mixture into six oval patties.
Step 2: Build the Slow Cooker
Place the sliced onions in the bottom of the slow cooker.
Arrange the beef patties over the onions.
Step 3: Prepare the Gravy
Whisk together the beef broth, gravy mix, and Worcestershire sauce.
Pour the mixture evenly over the patties.
Step 4: Slow Cook
Cover and cook on LOW for approximately 6 hours.
As the patties cook, they release flavorful juices into the gravy while the onions become soft and sweet.
The beef becomes extremely tender and absorbs the rich onion gravy.
Step 5: Thicken the Gravy
Mix the cornstarch and water until smooth.
Stir the mixture into the slow cooker during the final 20 minutes of cooking.
The gravy will become thick, glossy, and perfect for serving.
Serve the Salisbury steak over mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles and spoon plenty of onion gravy over the top.
